Tips For Dog Owners in a Divorce

Writer's picture: James ChauJames Chau

This article I found brings up a point that is probably furthest from mind when people enter into a divorce: who gets the dog?

California is one of the few staes in the country to have laws on the books regarding the disposition of the family dog. Now other states are moving along with the changes of the times. Dogs and Cats and family pets are becoming beloved members of the family and the law rightfully changes to allow the Courts to deal with them.

Courts in Illinois have moved to set structure to deal with this issue; however, in general, in the eyes of the law, pets are seen as property. As heartless as it sounds, this can lead to contentious problems in divorce. If you have pets and are facing divorce, it is important to find an attorney who will relate to this concern, and be able to negotiate effectively on your behalf.
