It may seem strange to western readers but divorce is still not legal in the Philippines. I read an interesting article about the new family law and divorce changes that are taking place in the Philippines.
Currently they are one of the few countries in the world where divorce is not an option for couples that wish to dissolve their union. The only option for citizens of the Philippines to dissolve their marriage is through an annulment.
The country is one of the most populous predominantly Catholic countries in Asia. The Catholic church doctrine has a large influence on the population.
According to the article public opinion is that by a slim majority the public favors allowing for divorce. The bill is called Act Instituting Absolute Divorce and Dissolution of Marriage or the Divorce bill for short.
The reasons for the bill are that it allows women who are being abused in their marriages a way to leave their husband due to domestic violence. The article goes on to say that women who leave their marriage and are estranged from their husband are often defenseless without any legal or financial protections. The ones that are most vulnerable are poor women who are left defenseless.
The bill is currently in the senate where it continues to be debated. The opposing sides believe that the Country is not ready for the bill because of the religious objections from the Catholic church.
